Get Out The Vote, a student organization, was originally started to precede the 2004 Presidential Debate hosted at the University of Miami. Its objective was to register students in the City of Coral Gables, a crucial part of the battleground State of Florida for most elections. Registering approximately 2,000 students to vote and establishing a polling site at the formerly known Convocation Center, the University became a strategic location to sway votes. On November 2, 2004, a high turnout of 62% registered to vote at the Convocation Center came out to vote.
To this day, Get Out The Vote maintains its mission as a student led organization to empower other students by registering them to vote and educating them about the issues that affect them. The group motivates University of Miami students to register to vote and mobilizes those students to go to the polls. No candidate endorsements are given, and no agenda is set. Instead, the belief is that students should learn about the issues and vote what they think.
This upcoming Presidential Election on November 6th, 2012 is key for all young voters. Voting is how students’ voices are heard, and this is where we can shape how our next four years will be at UM. Students have the chance to make change happen, and Get Out The Vote will help the students step up and speak out.
