Where is your student living next year?

Department of Housing & Residential Life (HRL)

Amid the excitement of the new spring semester starting, on-campus residents & off-campus students alike are beginning to put together their housing plans for the coming academic year and hopefully a key component of their planning involves a discussion with you.  There are several important considerations to talk about in terms of advantages to being on campus—typically those go beyond mere convenience and into aspects like access to helpful academic resources, opportunities to meet and interact with resident faculty as well as other students, and of course value.  If your student lives off-campus, they should be having similar "chats" about renewing leases, looking at alternative arrangements/roommates, and possibly even looking to move back on campus.

For resident students interested in continuing on campus next year, there is a new process for them to apply for and select a specific room or apartment bedroom.  There will be no housing lottery this year.  The initial application period will be from February 1st-14th within CaneLink, the University’s interactive, information portal.  Once the application process that includes a $500 prepayment and the requesting of preferred roommates is completed, participating resident students will receive priority on-line appointment times to select specific apartment/room spaces during the applicable sessions outlined below:

  • University Village apartment selection - February 16 - February 23
  • Residential College private single room selection - February 24 & 25
  • Residential College double occupancy room selection - February 29 – March 24

Current residents of University Village as well as private single rooms in Eaton, Mahoney, and Pearson Colleges will have the opportunity to retain their assignments or like spaces as part of the room selection process.  In early February, a more detailed letter about the application and room selection process will be sent to the permanent address for you to review and discuss with your student.

If your student is presently living off-campus or right now intends to move off-campus next year, the Department of Housing & Residential Life (HRL) wants you to really make an informed decision about your student’s future housing.  Nationally, students who live on campus have higher GPAs, tend to be more involved in campus life, and generally persist & graduate in 4 years at higher rates than their off-campus counterparts.  That being said, HRL does have a number of web-based resources related to off-campus accommodations as well as a full-time staff member who can assist students individually with their off-campus housing search process.  There is also an “Off-Campus Housing & Roommate Fair” held on campus in mid-April when students can get information directly from apartment complex managers as well as a number of related vendors such as furniture rental and local realtors.

We encourage you to discuss housing arrangements for next year with your student and make an informed choice about where they want to live next year.  If you have any questions regarding the housing application & room selection process, or off-campus housing resources, you can check the HRL website at www.miami.edu/housing or contact their office via telephone (305-284-4505) or e-mail (housing@miami.edu).

University Center Pool Reopening Celebration

University Center Pool Reopening Celebration

On the heels of the Whitten University Center celebrating its 50th Anniversary in April of 2015, the University Center Pool began a major renovation in late May of 2015. After six months of construction, the University Center Pool reopened in January of 2016. The grand-reopening celebration was held on January 14, 2016 and featured a live band, sunscreen and towel giveaways, and free hamburgers, hotdogs, and grilled chicken. While it was a chilly Miami day (temperatures were in the 60s) over 350 students, faculty, and staff attended the lunch-time celebration.

The University Center Pool is not only a great place to relax and meet friends, but also a very popular study location. Just as many text books can be seen on the pool deck as can towels. The pool itself looks more modern and sleek, with a new perimeter gutter system and the water line mere millimeters from the pool deck. The basin was changed from an off-white color to an aqua blue, which gives the illusion of blue water, as the water is crystal clear due to a new filtration system. Additional furniture improvements have been made as well, with new lounge spaces on the lakeside of the pool and upgrading the lounge chairs on the north-side of the pool.

University Center Pool
The University Center pool is also home to the Miami Hurricanes Swim and Dive teams. The double-size Olympic pool is ideal for the student-athletes as they compete for championships.  In the first swim meet back in the University Center pool, the swim team won against both Kansas and Rutgers paving the way for what hopefully continues to be a strong home-pool advantage.

The University Center Pool is located at the Student Center Complex is open 7 days a week, and family members can purchase a guest pass for $ 5.00. For more information regarding the University Center Pool please visit http://www.miami.edu/sa/index.php/student_center_complex/uc_pool/
